Lean Workshop Group DublinThe Event

The event which ran from Tuesday 26th April to Thursday 28th April received up to 70 visitors, from over 30 different companies in many different industries such as Engineering, Food and Drink Medical & Aerospace.  The  Workshop was an excellent opportunity for the attendees to understand and grow their knowledge of the Lean Processes on both a  theoretical and practical level, whilst creating an opportunity to meet and discuss with local companies about the challenges and successes that they have each faced.

The day also allowed the member companies to showcase to the attendees how all the products offered work in conjunction with one another to create the fully working lean cell which was on display and demonstrated by the Group.   Office Manager Louise presented the TwinBin, BinFlag and Kitting Solutions offered by Hurst Green Plastics on all three days with the assistance from Kerri in demonstrating the products.

The Trip

Now, a trip to Dublin would not be complete without a visit to the local attractions offered in the area.  Louise and Kerri opted to visit the Guinness Storehouse, conveniently located close to their hotel, to gain an insight into the fascinating history of the popular beverage.   After learning all about the history of Guinness the girls enrolled into the Guinness Academy to learn how to pour a perfect pint of Guinness – and successfully leaving with certificates detailing their accomplishment – and choosing to enjoy their beverage in the Gravity Bar which provided a beautiful 360° view across the city’s skyline.

The final part of the Trip was a visit to Dublin’s Famous Temple Bar area for some food and drinks to end a fantastic few days in a beautiful city – minus the very busy traffic! The city was buzzing – especially for a Wednesday evening and the girls enjoyed food from a beautiful Italian/Irish fusion restaurant before heading back to the hotel for the final day.

Next Event

The girls, now back in the office, are excited to Invite you to the next event located in Oxford on 7th & 8th June.  For further information or to book your place please email

Blog Update – MRO Americas – Dallas, Texas

Managing Director, Tommy Sharples and Office Manager, Louise Cross travelled ‘across the pond’ to Dallas, Texas to showcase our TwinBin and Kitting Solutions at the MRO Americas which ran from April 5 –7.

They both arrived into Dallas Fort Worth Airport on Friday 1st April, ready to set up that weekend. (Once  they had battled the jetlag, of course!).  With the stand set up day planned to take place on Sunday, they spent  Saturday exploring the Dallas Area to experience some of the delights of Dallas History and famous cuisine – Everything is bigger in Texas, Right?  Staying in Downtown Dallas, they opted to visit the Sixth  Floor Museum to learn about the history and assassination of US President John F Kennedy which took place in the very location the museum stood.  As photographs were not permitted inside the museum, these are the only pictures of the team upon entry and outside the museum.

The evening meal of choice had to be some of the famous Southern BBQ and located close by to the museum was Sonny Bryans Smokehouse in which the Beef Brisket, St Louis Pork Ribs and Slow cooked Pulled Pork was sampled – alongside some of the largest onion rings they had ever eaten!

After a leisure-filled Saturday – Set up Sunday had arrived!

Taking the team approximately 4 hours, they were all set up and ready for the show to begin on Tuesday afternoon – with the Monday off to explore the rest of Dallas before the show begins (and even a quick visit to see Mumford and Sons on tour!).

Tuesday – DAY 1

The show opened at 12:30 pm and the team were ready to showcase their innovative Storage System Solutions.  With visits to the stand from both new and existing customers from the USA and wider world excited to see the TwinBin System plus all our new product developments, Day one was a short but busy success.

Wednesday – Day 2

The second day of the show was the longest day and both Tommy and Louise were excited to meet and greet with all visitors to the stand to demonstrate the benefits of the different storage systems, including RFID technology alongside the TwinBin System.

On the evening of the second day of the event, Louise and Tommy received invitations to an extravagant reception hosted by one of our many valued customers which included magicians and contortionists

Thursday – Day 3

The third day of the event was another shorter day – but that did not make the day any less busy on the TwinBin Stand!  With a few potential new customers interested in the benefits the Twinbin can offer, we are looking forward to what the future holds with TwinBin and the USA.

Day 3 – Closedown

Closedown of the stand was planned once the end of the third day had finished and with a heavy heart, the team packed the stand away.

The event was a successful first USA Exhibition for our Company and we would like to take this opportunity to thank those that visited our stand.

The team representing Hurst Green Plastics and the TwinBin had this to say:

‘The trip was a fantastic opportunity to meet existing customers (some for the first time!) but also to create new business contacts in a part of the world that is still pretty unexplored for our growing company.  We are now looking forward and are excited about our future events across the globe including Farnborough Airshow, IMHX and Avalon Airshow’

5 Ways to Improve your Open Bin System

Open bins are great for storing all your parts great and small, but they have their setbacks. Whether it be cross-contamination, confusion of which screw is which or running out of stock try these top tips on improving your system.

1 – Colour Code your Store Rooms

Open BinsUse different coloured bins for different areas of your site.

Got 5 screws that look the same but are very different? Put each type in a different coloured bin for easy identification.

Colour code critical or fast moving parts, yellow for slower and green for slowest.

2 – Keep Items Bagged

One of the biggest problems when dealing with small parts is cross contamination. The best way to avoid your nuts and bolts being mixed up is to keep items bagged.

This also allows for easy identification if someone accidentally drops a bag and keeps parts from rolling away and becoming FOD.

3 – Employ a KanBan system

Stock-outs! Who knew that single rivet could be so important, but it is and your whole project is now on hold. The best way to avoid stock outs is to employ a KanBan system.

There are lots of systems out there to use, but if you want to keep it really simple just have two bags of product in the bin; people take from the first bag and then when it is gone there is reserve stock.

Have a bin for empty part bags so at the end of the day the stock manager can go through and easily know what to order.

4 – Divide Your Bin

If you are concern that the two bag systems will result in two lots of stock being used at once then divide your bin.

You can buy dividers for your bin which means there is only a small amount of reserve stock at the back of the bin for people to use while the goods are reordered.

5 – Invest in Stock Indicators

Take your KanBan system to the next level and add a stock indicator. Avoid having to trawl through looking at every bin to check stock levels by using a stock indicator.

They work by having two or sometimes three settings, in stock, out of stock and pending refill. These means the stock controller can easily see what products need refilling and what is already down for restocking.

If you have a two bag system on the go then stock outs will become a thing of the past. To make things even easier there are now stock indicators with RFID,

If you are interested in implementing any of these ideas all our stock control solutions including a brand new product will be on the show the MRO Dallas – email us at for more information.

Blog Update – To the Far East, and Beyond!

Two weeks ago we sent our Managing Director Mr Tommy Sharples to exhibit at the 5th Singapore Air show – Asia’s largest aerospace and defence event!

The biennial Airshow held from 16th February – 21st February 2016, received over 1000 exhibiting companies and 100,000 visitors to the show all ready to take part in the largest aerospace and defence event in Asia.  This allowed Hurst Green Plastics to showcase our product range and increase our exposure to various delegations in attendance.

We were kindly invited by United Aviation Singapore to be present on their booth B14, located in the prime position at the entrance to the hall in the Singapore Pavilion. Hurst Green Plastics proudly displayed and demonstrated their range of unique storage and dispensing products such as the TwinBin kanban system, their kitting range and also the integration of RFID into their products, allowing 24/7 real-time stock updates

Hurst Green Plastics 2015 Summary

2015 has been a very busy year for the whole company with…

♦ 6 Lean Workshop Group Seminars across the UK

♦ 5 installations across the world

♦ 2 major Airshows in very different time zones

– it’s a wonder how we have managed to fit them all in!

Avalon Airshow in Victoria

The first major event for Hurst Green Plastics for 2015 was the Avalon Airshow in Victoria, Australia.

Not only was this the first time we have exhibited in Australia but it was also the furthest away we have exhibited from our facilities here in Lancashire, England.

With the Asia Pacific region currently named as the fastest growing area within Aviation, we were delighted to book our stand and show how we can save companies within this region time and money through our patented Storage and Kitting Systems.

It was safe to say, the show did not disappoint – there were over 200,000 visitors over 6 days to the event and we have developed new business relationships with an area of the world previously unexplored by the company.

Major Installation in USA

The second major event for Hurst Green Plastics within 2015 was an installation for a Major Aircraft Manufacturer in the USA.  The installation was the first installation completed ‘across the pond’ by our team.  The installation took 5 men, 4 days to complete and comprised of over 40 racks and 2000 TwinBins.

This was just the first installation of many for the company as we completed a further 5 throughout the UK. The TwinBin and Racking installations took place in 4 different cities across the country and customers included a major British rail manufacturer and a major British automotive manufacturer.

The Paris Airshow

The next major event for Hurst Green Plastics was the Paris Airshow.  The Airshow attracted over 149,000 professional visitors over 5 days as well as an additional 200,000 visitors on the two public days, With 130 Aircraft on display and over $130 billion worth of orders as a result of the Airshow it was definitely worth the visit.  We took this fantastic opportunity to meet with existing business contacts and took the time to also begin new business relationships.  We left the event very excited for Farnborough Airshow next year!

The Lean Workshop Group

Amongst all the exhibitions and product installations, we also presented and hosted seminars at 6 Lean Workshop Group Events across the Country.

We held events in Coventry, Wakefield, Newport, Sunderland and Uxbridge, with a special event at the request of JLR Halewood.  Over 300 professionals attended the events at the 6 different locations.

We have many Lean Workshop Group events planned for next year across the country.  Check our website and Twitter Feed regularly for dates and locations and how to book your spot!

Sophia Returned

Hurst Green Plastics also welcomed Sophia back to the fold after being away for University.

She has now joined the company on a part-time basis whilst continuing her studies at University.

We Shipped to Our 50th Country

In 2015 we were delighted to have exported products to our 50th Country across the globe. The order, which was being shipped to Denmark, marked a special landmark occasion within the company.  New countries for 2015 in which we proudly exported to include Costa Rica, Estonia and Thailand.

The plans for 2016 are already dramatically underway with a total of 2 new products ready to sell and 3 events already confirmed – it’s already set to be a very busy year.

Unfortunately, our new products are a closely guarded secret and you will have to wait until January for them to be revealed!

Lean Workshop Group Event, Uxbridge, December 2015

The Lean Workshop group hosted its last event of 2015 at the Robert Bosch Training Centre in Uxbridge on 9th and 10th December.  The Lean Workshop Group is a consortium of nine companies whose expertise, knowledge and products can help make your company and operations more lean.

The event, held over two days, attracted over 70 visitors from 23 different companies in various sectors across the country.  The event combined theory, demonstrations and practical activities complete with the relevant question and answer sessions from the different companies to engage and challenge the visitors into a different way of thinking.   The event was also a great opportunity for visitors to meet with like-minded people to discuss the benefits and downfalls of systems within their own companies.

Louise and Sophia represented Hurst Green Plastics within the group for the first time and found the day to be engaging and informative.   Office manager Louise, who has been with Hurst Green Plastics for just over 2 years had this to say about the event:

‘It’s a really fantastic opportunity for our company to meet and present our products to new and existing contacts.  It really is brilliant how each product presented at the event works with one another to make a completely lean environment.  The format really engages each attendee with the various practical activities supporting the theory which is discussed throughout the day. I am now very much looking forward to representing Hurst Green Plastics at the various events planned throughout next year’.

The event in Uxbridge rounds off the 5 events the Lean Workshop Group held across England and Wales this year and the group is very excited to continue this as there are more events to be held throughout the UK in 2016.

We would just like to take this time to thank the other members of the group and our visitors to our events this year for their time and effort in making this a fantastic year for the group and we are all excited to see what 2016 brings for the Lean Workshop Group.
